IGNITE's First Half Is Complete — Here's What 56 Lessons, a Garden, and 320 Meals Look Like

THRIVE ON! Network Inc. (THRIVE ON!) and the Children's Home of Kingston (CHK) have completed the first two cycles of IGNITE — the Winter and Spring seasons — marking the close of the program's first half before summer break. Across 17 weeks and 56 lessons, 15 Early Thrivers showed up, built things, grew things, cooked things, and in the process, began to see themselves differently.

Two Cycles, One Strong Foundation

The Winter Cycle began in January with a clear intention: build trust, build skills, and build the conditions for something bigger. Early Thrivers were introduced to kitchen and tool safety, knife skills, basic construction techniques, emotional literacy, and group problem-solving — all within a structured, relationship-centered environment designed to meet them where they were.

The Spring Cycle shifted those foundations into action. Early Thrivers moved from practicing skills to using them to contribute — building garden infrastructure, cooking complete meals, constructing compost bins and raised beds, planting a garden, and engaging with community partners and educational institutions. The progression from "learning tools" to "building infrastructure," from "knife skills" to "preparing meals," became one of the strongest developmental arcs of the first half.

Together, the two cycles delivered 56 lessons across four pillars — COOK, GROW, BUILD, and SHARE — with all of participating Early Thrivers demonstrating improved proficiency in both core kitchen and core building competencies.

What They Built, Grew, and Made

The tangible impact of the first half is striking. Early Thrivers:

  • Produced 320 meals for families placed in emergency housing.

  • Built and planted five 4x8ft raised garden beds and revitalized 600 square feet of garden space at Ulster County Community Action.

  • Constructed a three-bay compost bin system for long-term sustainability.

  • Started over 100 edible plants under lights and transplanted them into the garden.

  • Maintained 16 feet of floral beds and moved 8 cubic yards of mulch.

  • Took a field trip to the Culinary Institute of America, which, for 85% of them, was their first time ever visiting a college campus.

All of this, designed and led by Early Thriver Program Associate Director Francis O’Leary, happened over 700 hours of side-by-side staff and Early Thriver mentorship — a number that speaks to what made IGNITE distinct from the start.

A Room Where Everyone Was Learning

One of the most unexpected and powerful aspects of IGNITE's first half was what happened when approximately 15 Early Thrivers and 15 CHK staff members found themselves in the same room together — not in a top-down instructional model, but in a shared learning space.

Under Francis’s leadership and instruction, CHK staff participated directly alongside CHK Early Thrivers. Activities became collaborative. Mentorship happened organically during hands-on tasks. This cohort of bright young men got to watch adults model emotional regulation, problem-solving, and teamwork in real time — and they got to be seen doing the same.

"There is nothing quite like watching young people discover what they're capable of," said Candace Lindenlauf, Early Thriver Program Director and Vice President of THRIVE ON!. "Seeing them step into their own power — recognizing that they can create real change in a real place — that's the whole point."

IGNITE also became something the Early Thrivers actively wanted to protect. Participation grew into a meaningful part of CHK's behavioral support system — something young people worked to maintain access to, not something they endured. That buy-in, earned through relationship and real work, may be the first half's most significant achievement.
